Mengenal Kalimat Gabungan dan Atribut Kata Penghubung

Dua kalimat sederhana dengan pola-pola kalimat yang telah kita bahas sebelumnya dapat digabungkan dengan kata penghubung. Gabungan dari 2 kalimat sederhana dengan satu kata penghubung ini disebut kalimat gabungan

Penggabungan kalimat dengan coordinate Conjuction

contoh :

* John D, Rockfeller was the founder of the Standard Oil Company, and he was the richest man

in the world at the time of his retirement.

Kalimat sederhana pertama : John D. Rockfeller was the founder of the Standard Oil Company

kata penghubung : and

Kalimat sederhana kedua : he was the richest man in the world at the time of his retirement

Dua kalimat diatas memiliki pola kalimat dasar yang sama yang dihubungkan dengan coordinate conjuctions and, yang bermakna penambahan.

Jenis coordinate conjunction lainnya berdasarkan kategori makna :

a. Menunjukkan pertentangan but

contoh :

* My father moved to the city but the family stayed in the village

b. Menunjukkan pilihan or

contoh :

* Are you going to the movie or wil you prepare the test?

c. Menunjukkan alasan for dan so

contoh :

* I failed for I was sick yesterday

* The ticket was cheap, so I bought one for you

Penggabungan Kalimat dengan Correlative Conjuction

contoh :

* Either you will admit, or I will sue

* He is not only generous but he is also dependable

Berikut bentuk correlative conjunction yang sering muncul dalam soal-soal struktur :

Either ..... or....

Neither.....nor......

Both......and.....

Not only.......but also....

Penggabungan Kalimat dengan Conjuctive Adverb

contoh ;

* The sun uses up over four millions tons of hydrogen per second, however, it still has enough

hydrogen to last for the next five billion years.

Kata penghubung (conjuctive adverb) kalimat di atas adalah : however

Kata-kata conjunctive adverb yang utama adalah :

Penggabungan Kalimat dengan Transition Expressions

contoh :

*Venus is almost the same size as the earth, on the contrary its mountain ranges are much bigger.

Kalimat diatas dihubungkan dengan transition expression : on the contrary

Jenis kata penghubung ini terbentuk dari sebuah frasa kata depan (preposition phrase) yang juga digunakan sebagai kata keterangan (adverb) di dalam sebuah kalimat.

a. Penghubung yang menunjukkna sesuatu yang bertentangan
